The Benefits of Wine
It is well studied that moderate daily wine consumption (2 glasses a day for men and 1 glass for women) prevents cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. In red wine, the compound resveratrol prevents inflammation and cancer. Furthermore, resveratrol has been found to promote longevity through gene expression. On the island of Sardinia, Italy, there is a high concentration of Centenarians, people who live to their hundreds. Their long-lived age can be attributed to their diet of whole grains, goat milk, vegetables, and red wine. They consume in moderation a wine high in resveratrol made from Grenache grapes, known as Cannonau.
While less studied, white wine may also be beneficial. In a pilot study it was found to improve cholesterol. White wine may also be higher in antioxidants compared to red wine.
